Political deepfakes 🎭
In the digital age, where tweets fly faster than the speed of light, there's a new trickster in town: political deepfakes. These sneaky AI-generated images are pulling the wool over our eyes, especially during the heated moments of election seasons. The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) has spotted a concerning trend on X (the artist formerly known as Twitter)—a whopping 130% monthly increase in election-related deepfake shenanigans!
Imagine, with a few clicks, creating a photo that looks just real enough to make you second-guess. These techy mirages are not only a marvel of artificial intelligence but also a potential pitfall for our democratic disco. Why? Because when fake news spreads like wildfire, it's not just gossip; it's a wildfire that could torch the very foundations of fair play in elections.
The study points fingers at free-to-use AI tools and the social media platforms' laissez-faire attitude towards moderation. And while some AI image generators are sitting in the corner with a dunce cap (Mid-journey, we're looking at you), others are trying to play nice. Despite the best efforts of some platforms to introduce labels and disclosures, it's like trying to stop a flood with a teacup. The call for more robust measures is loud and clear, as the integrity of our elections hangs in the balance.
Feeling intrigued? Keep your eyes peeled and your critical thinking cap on, because in this digital arena, not everything is as it seems.

Elon Musk has a problem with OpenAI
I aimed to create an image to accompany the story, but it didn't align with our content policy, so I'm unable to generate it. Let's dive into the article's essence instead!
In the high-tech playground where AI dreams are made, OpenAI stands tall, brushing off dust from a recent legal scuffle with tech mogul Elon Musk. Musk, who once pledged a knightly sum of up to $1 billion to the AI cause, ended up contributing a less princely $45 million. OpenAI, not one to keep its ledger under wraps, pointed out that it's been passing the hat around, amassing over $90 million from other generous souls.
The heart of the matter? Musk is crying foul, accusing OpenAI of straying from its noble quest for the good of humanity to chase after the glittering allure of profits. OpenAI, on its part, is standing its ground, maintaining its halo with claims of unwavering dedication to the greater good.
This epic saga of tech titans and artificial aspirations sets the stage for a showdown that could reshape the future of AI. As these giants lock horns, the rest of us are left wondering: in the quest to create machines that think, will humanity's best interests remain at the heart of innovation, or will the siren song of profit lead us astray?
Stay tuned as this digital drama unfolds, reminding us that even in the world of zeros and ones, the plot always thickens.
It takes two to tango: Microsoft found another AI partner
In a bold move that's got the tech world buzzing, Microsoft has cozied up with French AI maverick Mistral, putting a cool €15 million on the table. This isn't just about cash—it's about bringing Mistral's latest brainchild, the Mistral Large AI model, into the cozy confines of Azure, Microsoft's cloud computing behemoth. Why? To sprinkle a little more AI magic onto Azure and plant its flag deeper into European soil.
But wait, there's more to this tech tango than meets the eye. Microsoft's not putting all its eggs in one basket; rather, it's diversifying its AI portfolio. By welcoming Mistral into the Azure family, Microsoft is not just expanding its AI arsenal but also wooing developers hooked on Mistral's models, all the while giving a nod to the European Union's tightrope walk over AI regulation with the AI Act. This partnership is less about picking favorites and more about Microsoft playing the field—strategically. It's about offering choices galore on Azure, making it the go-to playground for AI aficionados and developers alike. With Mistral's already established European presence, Microsoft is not just investing in technology; it's investing in a bridge to Europe's burgeoning AI market, especially within the public sector.
As the digital landscape continues to evolve, this move by Microsoft could well be a masterstroke in the global AI chess game, marking a new chapter in how AI shapes our world, one partnership at a time.
